Last Tuesday Phyllis Broadbent, the Pearly Queen of Islington joined the Geezers in Kelly’s pie and mash shop at 526 Roman Rd, London E3 5ES.
The Pearly Kings and Queens tradition was started by Victorian market traders who would add a row of pearl buttons to the outside seam of their trousers. They would have a whip-round to help any of their number who needed help. This was taken further by Henry Croft who had a whole suit covered in pearl buttons and raised money for orphans. Before WWI each London borough had their own Pearly King and Queen. They still raise money for charity today.
After eating pie and mash and liquor the group headed across to the newly opened Common Room.
Imogen Garfinkel reported the event in detail for Roman Road London here.
