Another part of historic Tower Hamlets is under threat. The East End Water Group are fighting to stop the demolition of the Borough’s gas holders. Please help them by signing their petition. And you’ve only got a day to do it!!
Here’s the story.
The previous signed petitions could not be sent in response to the consultation because they were also addressed to National Grid. As National Grid is determined to demolish all three holders (and the number 1 at Poplar has just been recorded by archaeologists prior to demolition) a last effort has to be made with Tower Hamlets – in the hope that they will negotiate retention with National Grid.
So far only 300 people have signed the petition for all three historic gasholders and we obviously need more people to sign by 1 January 2017..
PLEASE LOOK AGAIN AT THE GASHOLDER SPECIAL NEWSLETTER AND DO YOUR BEST TO SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO SIGN.
Tower Hamlets is having its built heritage systematically regenerated out of existence. There is very little left in Poplar. Bethnal Green needlessly lost its remarkable Bonner Primary School; the two historic gasholders by the canal are almost certain to be demolished unless thousands sign the historic gasholders petition; and one of its finest buildings, the former London Chest Hospital, is losing its south wing and the main building will lose its original roof and ventilation tower, unless thousands sign the Chest Hospital petition.
I’ve just visited the gasholder park and development in Kings Cross. Beautiful design and retains the Grade 1 listed gas holders framework! How come Tower Hamlets heritage is of no interest?
Anyone know any update on this?
